Columbia Basin ace, and All-NWAACC Pitcher Steve Ames took the mound in an effort to keep the hopes of the Hawks alive in the championship tournament against the third-ranked West Champions Lower Columbia. Ames struggled in the first as the Red Devils got him dialed in for a total of four runs on four hits that spelled doom for Hawks - since Devil starter Ben Rosen was bringing, perhaps, his best stuff of the season in this pivotal NWAACC match. The Red Devils built the 4-0 first inning lead on runs by Jett Hart, Brookes Lindsley, Richie Allen and Luke Zirkle on RBIs generated by Allen, Zirkle (2), and Bo Lybeck. The Devils added an additional three runs over the next three innings to up the lead to 7-0 after four innings while Rosen kept the Hawks' bats in check. Columbia Basin got on the board in the fifth when first baseman Brett Bochsler scored on a ground out strike by centerfeilder Steve Ockerman., but the Devils answered with two more runs in the sixth. Coach Kelly Smith must have felt that Rosen needed relief after a hit batter in the seventh when he sent in Rye Phillips, who continued to hold the Hawks until closer Cody Fassold took over in the ninth to the end the Hawks' hopes for a title in 2008. With the win, Lower Columbia will meet Edmonds for the title on Monday, May 26th at 12pm. If Edmonds wins, a second game will be required at 3pm to determine the champion, since the Devils have no losses in the tournament thus far. The Loss ends the season for the Hawks who had a 17-11 record in the tough East Region and 38-17 record overall. Head Coach Scott Rogers will be stepping down after a highly impressive ten-year tenure at Columbia Basin. Rogers willl continue his roots at CBC as the school's Athletic Director.

The first five innings was a complete pitcher's duel by Edmond's Tyler Rogstad and Mt Hood's Nick Opitz. Opitz was pitching a 2-hit gem until Edmonds tagged him for a another pair of hits and two runs in the sixth off scores by shortstop Ben Thielsen and first baseman Kirby Young. Coach Byran Donohue stuck with his ace, but finally had to call in Mark Hunter from the bullpen in the seventh after the Tritons tallied two more runs with runners on first and third. Hunter got theSaints out of the inning, but not before Edmonds racked up two more runs to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Saints finally got on the board in the eighth with a run by centerfielder Eric Copenhagen on shortstop Brad Walter's single, but the Mt Hood batters could not get anything serious going against Rogstad. Rogstad earned the complete game win on a six-hit, four strikeout performance that sends the Tritons into Monday's action. Depending on the outcome of the LCC vs CBC game tonight, Edmonds will face either Lower Columbia in the championship game at noon, or against Columbia Basin at noon. [edited] The South Co-Champion Saints end the season with a 21-9 region record and 32-17 overall under first year head coach Byran Donohue.

About 1600 fans packed into David Story Field to watch the home town Lower Columbia Red Devils take on the South co-champion Mt Hood Saints from Gresham, OR. The Devils took an early 2-0 lead in the first off scores by Jett Hart, via a fielder's choice by Richie Allen, and Allen from a Shawn Peterson double. The Saints evened the score in the fourth when Josh Hogan scored on a Brad Wallters double and Walters touched home on Nate Shaver's double. Hood took the lead in the next inning on a Eric Copenhagen score off a sacrifice fly by Hogan. The wheels fell off the Saints' cart in the sixth when the Devils picked up three runs, then added another three in the eighth to lead 8-3. The Saints tried to mount a comeback in the ninth, scoring two, but fell short in a 8-5 loss. In a minor bracket alteration - The Saints will take on Edmonds on Sunday at 2pm while Lower Columbia will play Columbia Basin in the evening game at 7pm. The bracket change occurred since Lower Columbia and Edmonds have already played each other in a contest yesterday. The only time a pair of teams will replay in a NWAACC Championship tournament is in the actual title game.

Edmonds took quick control of the game with a pair of runs by Nick Pizzuto and Kirby Young. Young doubled in Pizzuto then reached home on a fielding error. The Tritons then added another run by Ben Thielsen off a fielding error in the third to increase the Edmonds lead to 3-0. Skagit Valley exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth and it looked like Edmonds was in a complete melt down, subbing two pitchers before getting out of the inning. Skagit's six runs came on just three hits. Kyle Boe, Kyle Pease, Kyle Humphrey, Trent Henderson, Mike Chiarelli and Aaron Headrick all touched home plate during the inning. Edmonds answered quickly in the top of the fifth when Nick Meehan tripled with the bags loaded scoring Dan Ninomiya, Young and Pizzuto. Taylor Hudson followed the triple with a single to drive in Meehan to regain the lead 7-6. The Cardinals tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth off Eddie Sobczak's sacrifice fly that scored Ben Harty. After four scoreless innings, Edmonds scored the winning run in the top of the 10th when Thielsen scored on an error that advanced Edmonds into Sunday's action. The loss ends a strong season for the 2007 NWAACC runner-up Cardinals who were 16-8 in regional play and 29-16 overall. Edmonds will play Mt Hood on Sunday, May 25th - time to be determined base on the outcome of the Lower Columbia - Mt Hood game.

South so-champion Linn-Benton got into trouble early as the Columbia Basin batters were all over Roadrunner starter Dan Maurer, who only lasted 1 2/3 innings before Greg Hawk pointed to the bullpen for relief. The Hawks collected a pair of runs by Tyler Reeves and Ricky Klontz to take a 2-0 lead after two. The Hawks stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Luke Fieser doubled to score Brady Farrington and Phil Liniger tripled to score Fieser. The Roadrunners got a rally going in the fifth, but back to back pick-offs by Brad Hjellum kept the scoreboard clear of runs as Linn-Benton stranded a pair of runners on base. Linn-Benton finally got on the board in the seventh with a run by Brent Trask on a pass ball, but again failed to take advantage of the moment leaving a two in scoring position. The Roadrunners picked-up another run in the eighth on a score by Blaine Goodwin on a Trevor Smith single. Linn-Benton again threaten to score big in the ninth, but a base running interference call with the bags loaded overruled a scoring runner and a second out award to the Hawks. The Roadrunners' Chad Hunter piched a strong game in relief, throwing 6.1 innings on 2 hits and 7K's. Bryce Hjellum threw 7 innings giving up only 4 hits and firing 8K's for the win while Bobby Jackson earned the save. Linn-Benton finishes the a very successful season 21-9 in league and 32-17 overall. With the win, the Hawks will stay alive play Lower Columbia game on Sunday, May25th. Time to be determined based on the outcome of the Mt Hood - Lower Columbia game.

In a match-up of NWAACC powerhouses, the second-ranked North Champion Edmonds Tritons took on the third-ranked West Champion Lower Columbia Red Devils to advance in the no-loss side of the championship tourney bracket. Edmonds took a 1-0 lead in the second on a wild pitch score from third by Dan Ninomiya. The Devils answered in the fourth on a RBI single by Bo Lybeck to score Luke Zirkle, knotting the game at one apiece. With the bases loaded in the sixth, the Devils struck a devastating blow when an error allowed Lybeck and Shawn Peterson to score to expand the Lower Columbia lead to 3-2. The stifling Devil combo pitching duo of Brain Erickson and Luke Zirkle was too much for the Tritons to break and the Devils added another pair of insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to take a 5-1 victory over the Tritons. Erickson earned the win with a 3-hit, 3K performance over 5 1/3 innings , while Zirkle completely shut down the Triton bats allowing zero hits on a pair of strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings to pick up the save. Edmonds will take on 2007 NWAACC runner up Skagit Valley on Saturday, May 24th at 2pm in the one loss side of the bracket. The win for Lower Columbia will set up a match-up against South Co-champion Mt Hood on Saturday, May 24th at 7pm.

Game ended in 8th due to 10-run in rule HR - Brett Davis, MHCC 3-run homer HR - Copenhagen, MHCC 2-run homer The Saints jumped the Hawks early on a three-run bomb by Brett Davis that scored Brad Walters and Eric Copenhagen in the first. Copenhagen followed up with a 2-run dinger in the second, scoring Josh Hogan to put the Saints up 5-0. Hood added another score in the third on a wild pitch and throwing error that allowed Brett Davis to score to increase the lead to 6-0. Things went from bad to worst for the Hawks in the top of the fourth when another slew of errors allowed three runners to score to make it a 9-0 Mt Hood advantage. Columbia Basin put together a string of runs by Phil Liniger, Adam Johnson and Tyler Reeves over the next two innings but the Saints piled on fiver more in the seventh and eighth to win 14-3 in the eighth on the 10-run rule. Dylan Jones threw a complete game, eight hit performance on just a single strikeout for the win. Columbia Basin will meet Linn-Benton in the one-loss side of the bracket Saturday, May 24 at 12:35pm. Mt Hood advances to play the winner of the Edmonds/Lower Columbia contest on Saturday, May 24th at 7:00pm.

In the second lowest scoring affair of the tournament so far, Linn-Benton drew first blood in the fifth when Dylan Durrell scored on a Knight error to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead. The Knights lit-up the board in the sixth off runs by Joe Intermill and Edward Rodriguez to take a 2-1 advantage. Linn-Benton tied the game in the seventh on a RBI single by Blaine Goodwin that scored Mitchell Nelson. The Roadrunners put the game away for good in the eighth when Nelson doubled to score Trevor Smith and Jake Rassmussen in a 4-2 shocker that saw the elimination of top-ranked Wenatchee Valley in two consecutive games. Linn-Benton will advance to play the loser of Mt Hood/Columbia Basin contest on Saturday, May 24th at 11am.

2-run HR - Ben Harty, SVC Skagit Valley and Pierce battled hard through five six innings knotted at 1-1 when the rain hit David Story Field causing a 1 1/2 hour delay. When the teams returned to the field, the Cardinals must have gotten a lift from the break as they exploded for four runs in the seventh, the first two coming off Ben Harty's 2-run blast. Skagit added two more in the eighth to put the game out of reach in a 9-3 win that advances the Cardinals and eliminated Pierce. Skagit pitcher Trent Line earned the win pitching 8 1/3 innings with 6-hits and 6K's. Skagit Valley will meet the loser of the Edmonds/Lower Columbia game on Saturday May 24th at 2pm. The Raiders complete the season with a 22-24 overall record and finished third in the west with a 12-13 record.

It took all nine innings for West Region Champion Lower Columbia to defeat top-ranked Wenatchee Valley, who entered the championships as the #2 seed from the East Region despite winning the region championship. The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning on an Edward Rodriguez ground out RBI that scored East MVP Curran Redal. Wenatchee struck again in the 3rd on the another Rodriguez-Redal scoring combo to make it a 2-0 Knights' lead. It took another three innings before anyone scored in the first pitching duel of the tournament - this time The Red Devils struck pay dirt with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th to tie the contest two-all. Jett Hart got the Devils on board on a RBI single by Brooks Lindsley. Lindsley later scored on an error on a Shawn Peterson rap that Wenatchee had trouble fielding. The pitching duel resumed for another few innings and it looked as if the game, originally scheduled for a 7:35pm start, but actually commenced at 9:30pm, could also run into extra innings (the first game of the day took 12 innings). With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, and well after midnight, the Lower Columbia squad finally relieved the tired crowd when Nic Shadle tripled to right center and Hart drove him in on sure-out hit, that Wenatchee failed to turn, to give the Devils the 3-2 game ending victory. Zach Swart went eight innings for the Knights giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 5. Chad Wagner went 5 1/3 innings for the Devils giving up 3 runs on 3 hits and 5K's for the Devils. Lucas Christie took the loss in relief while Mike Greene claimed the win in relief for Lower Columbia. Friday's action will see the Red Devils will take on North Region Champion Edmonds at 7:35pm while Wenatchee Valley will try to stay alive in the one- loss bracket against Linn-Benton at 12:35pm.

Pierce got into a deep hole in the first inning and even deeper in the second when the Hawks added two more runs to take an early 6-0 lead. Columbia Basin collected runs by Phil Liniger, Drew Goodman, Ricky Klontz, Luke Fiester and Brady Farrington (2) on RBI hits by Liniger (single) , Goodman (double & ground out), Prow (walk) and Fiester (triple). The Raiders hit paydirt in the 6th on a Kody Gibson ground out RBI that scored Daryl Schlepp to make it a 6-1 game. The Hawks added two more in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch and an error that allowed Adam Johnson and Tyler Reeves to score to swell the Columbia Basin lead to 8-1. The Pierce bats rallied for a pair of runs in the 8th, but could never get anything substantial going against starter pitcher Zack Gallagher or reliever Brad Rutherford who took over for Gallagher in the 8th. Columbia Basin added three more runs in the 7th and 8th to win a 11-3 game. Gallagher threw a 6-hit, 8K 7 1/3 inning game for the win. Bobby Wassman took the loss as he struggled to get in the zone. Reliever Darryl Morrow kept the Raiders in the game with a 5 inning, 1-hit, 8K performance. CBC will take on Mt Hood in Friday's action at 4:35pm while Pierce and Skagit Valley try to survive day two in a 9:35am game.

North Champion Edmonds got the scoring going in the first on scores by Ben Thielson and Kirby Young. Young and Dan Ninomiya ripped the RBIs for the Tritons. Young and Ninomiya added additional scores to extend Edmond's lead to 4-0 in the 3rd and Nick Pizzuto touched home on a RBI double by Ninomiya in the 5th. The Linn-Benton offense finally got something generated in the 6th when Tucker Whitten and Blaine Goodwin scored on a two-run RBI double by Shane Garrett. The Roadrunners continued to mount the comeback in the top of the 8th when Whitten and Garrett scored on two fielding errors by the Tritons on close the gap to 5-4. Edmonds added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when Nick Meehan scored on a single by Cam Softli and Paris Shewey closed the door on the Roadrunner bats to win 6-4. Tyler Rice picked up the win on a 4-hit, 6-strikeout performance and Shewey earned the save. The Tritons will meet the winner of the Lower Columbia/Wenatchee Valley game at 7:35pm Friday while Linn-Benton will face the loser of that contest in the one-loss side of the double elimination bracket at 12:25pm.

Skagit Valley got on the board early on taking a 3-0 lead as Mt Hood starter Jerad Thompson got off to a shaky start. Thompson regained composure and the Saint batters chipped away at the Cardinal lead scoring a pair of runs in the second and third innings. Kurt Snowley hit a RBI single to score Mike Cero in the second while Dylan Jones stole his way to third and Brad Walters hit an RBI ground-out to score Jones in the third. Skagit picked up another run in fifth on a RBI double by Kyle Pease to score Aaron Headrick to increase the Cardinal lead to 4-2. The Saints' Josh Hogan followed Jones earlier act by stealing his way to third then scored on another Snowley RBI. Snowley collected his third RBI of the game on the 7th, scoring Nate Shaver, to bring the Saint to within one, 5-4. Both starting pitchers took relief in the 8th. Thompson threw 11 K's and Tyrell Poggemeyer logged 5K's for the Cards. Mt Hood took the lead in the 8th on RBI singles by Brad Walters and Brett Davis to score Cero and Josh Hogan., but Skagit answered quickly in the ninth on a double by Kyle Humphrey to score Alex Barbee and Tanner Leighton to send the game into extra innings. The Saints finally broke the tie in the bottom of the 12th as Bill Klonz singled to drive in Jones to send the Mt Hood up against the winner of the Columbia Basin/Pierce contest at 4:35pm Friday. Jay Newton earned the win for the Saints while JJ McLeod took the loss in relief for the Cardinals. Skagit Valley will move into the one-loss side of the bracket to play the loser of the Columbia Basin/Pierce game at 9:35pm Friday.
